Are there any requirements to change my name?
There are a number of requirements which you must meet in order to be eligible to legally change your name by deed poll:
In order to change your own name by deed poll you must be at least sixteen years old. A parent can apply on child's (under 16) behalf providing everyone with parental responsibility for the child consents to the name change taking place.
Nationality and country of residence
Please refer to the section below which applies to you:
British citizens living in the UK
If you are a British citizen and live somewhere within the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) you can use a deed poll to change your name without any restrictions.
British citizens living abroad
If you are a British citizen and live outside of the United Kingdom you can apply for a deed poll to change the name on your British passport and then use the passport to get any foreign documents updated. We advise you to contact your local British mission to ensure that there are no special requirements which must be met before they will change the name on your passport.
Foreign nationals living in the UK
If you are a foreign citizen living somewhere within the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland) you can use a deed poll to get your UK documents updated but we advise you to contact your country's High Commission or Embassy in London before you submit your application to confirm whether they will issue a passport in your new name using your deed poll as evidence. If they will accept a deed poll as proof of your name change there may be special requirements which must be met.
